1-sch-L

1-sch-L is the subject of this website. It’s a Mid-Atlantic co-educational pre-k-through-12 private school founded in the late 1950s on progressive academic ideals mixed with a desire for a classical education. It was founded by professors at 3-sch-L and classes first met in 2-pl-L, a building on 3-sch-L’s grounds. It is from this building that the school took its name. 1-sch-L later moved to 17-pl-L, where it became an elementary and middle school that kept adding grades. It became a k-8 school, and at some point moved to a site in 18-pl-L into a wealthy family’s old summer lodge, where it remains, at which point it began adding more grades, graduating its first class in 1971. 1-sch-L now graduates between 50 and 100 students each year.

1-sch-L has admitted it had a problem with child sexual abuse in the 1970s—this was reported recently in news outlets. More recently, the school began admitting that children may have been sexually abused in the 1980s, too. The school has hired lawyers to investigate, but there is an obvious conflict-of-interest with a school paying for its own investigation.

Meanwhile, stories told by alumni and in the town indicate slightly over 40 years of abuse, with abusers being at the school for almost 60 years. The first stories of abuse begin in 1967 and go through the mid-2000s. The earliest that an abuser was at the school was the very early 1960s, and a person of interest in child sexual abuse was among the founders of the school. From the early 1970s through the 2010s, the school quietly let its abusers go; this occurred as recently as 2016. People whom alumni and townspeople name as abusers still continue to work and teach at the school

2-sch-L

2-sch-L was a co-educational, progressive school about twenty miles away from 1-sch-L It did not divide students into grades, and on paper it had a science-based curriculum. It also took emotionally-disturbed teenagers as well as more traditional students. It was founded by 817, who was also a founding member of 1-sch-L. He wanted to create a school that pushed educational boundaries even further than 1-sch-L. 2-sch-L closed in the very late 1960s when it burned. Funds could not be found to rebuild.

2-sch-L reputedly had a child sex abuse problem. Two teachers from 2-sch-L ended up at 1-sch-L, where they sexually abused students. It’s likely both began sexually abusing students while at 2-sch-L. The teen girl who shared an on-campus apartment at 1-sch-L with 5744 was likely a former 2-sch-L student. The school was in a wooded area, and one band from in town was known to practice there, so adults not associated with the school may have had access to children there. 817 was known to have students in and out of his house, which was either on school property, or abutted up against school property. Furthermore, there were known to be few boundaries between adults and students. The geography and culture would have made the sexual abuse of children fairly easy to accomplish.

3-sch-L

3-sch-L is a local college that uses a set curriculum in the classics. Undergraduates all take the same classes and graduate with the same major. 3-sch-L is prominent in the town and several hundred years old. In the 1930s, after failing to join the State university system and facing closure, 3-sch-L adopted its classics curriculum as way to survive.

Students all take the same courses, meeting in small groups to discuss texts with their professors. The school has a heavy reading load, and proponents believe that this course of study creates life-long learners with flexible minds. Opponents believe it creates well-read people who lack focus. 3-sch-L has grown in popularity and serves as a major cultural center in the town, possibly more so now than 4-sch-L, which is less accessible.

1-sch-L was founded by people associated with 3-sch-L. 1-sch-L originally started in 2-pl-L, a building on the campus of 3-sch-L. Professors and graduates were associated with its founding, and many graduates of 3-sch-L (and some professors) have gone on to work at 1-sch-L. While there doesn’t appear to be an official connection, 1-sch-L is sometimes called 3-sch-L’s prep school.

Many faculty and some administrators came from 3-sch-L, usually as former students. Many abusers at 1-sch-L also came from 3-sch-L. This may be because of the number of people who came from 3-sch-L, or there may be something about 1-sch-L that encouraged people from 3-sch-L who had issues with children to feel comfortable with 1-sch-L. It should be noted that two faculty members from 5-sch-MW, which also emphasises the classics, came to 1-sch-L and abused.

4-sch-L

4-sch-L is a service academy located in the town. It is old, revered, and many people in the town are associated with it through work. Townsfolk sometimes host students, serving as families away from home.

Access to the grounds is somewhat restricted, so it now serves as less of a cultural center in the town than it once did. Before the 2000s, people could simply walk onto the campus and hang out, eat lunch, even enter many of the buildings. Townspeople, particularly young people, often got food in town and ate by the water on campus. The campus of 4-sch-L was a place where, at least for white youngsters, you could sit or read quietly outside and not be harassed. The racial tensions and prejudice against people who dressed in alternative clothes seemed less there, and while 4-sch-L students would harass townies in town, they behaved themselves on campus, at least during the day.

Students from 4-sch-L were known to sexually harass girls in town for decades. It seems most women at 1-sch-L who grew up in the town have a story about being sexually harassed or assaulted by 4-sch-L students, sometimes at ages as young as 12-14. Girls who grew up in the town were warned to stay away from 4-sch-L students when these students roamed the town in groups, and many children who grew up in the town were told to stay indoors on nights when 4-sch-L students received ‘liberty,’ meaning they were free to be out on the town. If something happened to a girl who went downtown during 4-sch-L liberty or after a 4-sch-L football game, her parents and peers would tell her it was her own fault for going out on such a night. Stories from the 1970s and 1980s suggest police turned a blind eye to most of this behavior, including drunk and disorderly conduct by 4-sch-L students.

There was a sense in the 1980s that the children of families who hosted 4-sch-L students might be spared some of this abuse. It’s not known if this is true—and it may not even be knowable.

Oddly, women who were harassed by 4-sch-L students when they were girls often have a deep affection for the place as adults. They sometimes host 4-sch-L students, attend and celebrate football games. Some consider 4-sch-L students whom they hosted as extended family.

Supposedly, 4-sch-L now has less sexual harassment among its students, and 4-sch-L students harass girls in town less. It’s not known if this is true, or if it’s even been studied. What is known is that, historically, service academies and other types of military bases are poor at accurately reporting sexual abuse both among service members and between service members and civilians.

There are a few connections between 1-sch-L and 4-sch-L, but not many. The children of some families associated with 4-sch-L attended the school. One abuser had an art show at 4-sch-L. The biggest connection, however, is the observation that parents may have felt more comfortable with their children hanging out

It’s about 20 miles to the north of 1-sch-L, not far from where 2-sch-L once stood. It is known as fairly conservative and requires a strict dress code. 1-sch-L and 6-sch-L had a fairly fierce rivalry in the 1980s, particularly in sports, with 6-sch-L mostly having better teams. 7-sch-L is a co-educational pre-k-through-12 co-educational country day school with some boarding students, most of whom appear to be international. It’s about 35 miles to the south of 1-sch-L. Its tuition is cheaper, more students are on financial aid, and it has a reputation for being either more welcoming, or less prestigious than 1-sch-L, depending on who you talk to. It doesn’t have the mild prejudice 1-sch-L has against children who live in housing developments to the west that are closes to DC. People from those areas who attend 1-sch-L used to sometimes switch to 7-sch-L.

One abuser from 1-sch-L is known to have ended up at 7-sch-L, and in the course of asking questions, information about other abusers at 7-sch-L came out, with one of these abusers being named. 7-sch-L was notified that one abuser from 1-sch-L ended up there, but was uninterested in investigating.

18-sch-L

18-sch-L is a local public high school serving the area. In the 1960s, it would have been a segregated whites-only school. Now it serves the general population; however, in the county where the town is, most white people with funds to do so elect to place their children in private school, so much so that real estate agents figure this cost into their cost-of-living estimates for the area.

18-sch-L has an excellent Baccalaureate program, essentially a school-within-a-school, that can complete with any local private school for its colleges admissions—it’s track record with colleges is that good. It requires that students work very hard though, something that many local private schools do not do. It’s honors program is only so-so, and it’s regular track is, in places, simply a method of warehousing students for four years.
